Hoeven Appoints Citizens to State Service

BISMARCK - Governor John Hoeven recently appointed several citizens to serve on state boards.

Dr. John Fishpaw of Minot has been re-appointed to the Board of Dental Examiners. Fishpaw practices at Dakota Dental Health Center and will serve a second five-year term with the Board. Linda Neppl of Fargo has also been appointed to a five-year term on the Board. Neppl replaces Rita Kunz; she is a Hygienist with Dr. J.L. McDonald's Dental Office. The Board of Dental Examiners' duties include examining, registering, and licensing dentists.

Judge Karen Kosanda Braaten of Grand Forks and Sandi Tabor of Bismarck have been appointed to the North Dakota STOP Violence Against Women Advisory Committee. Judge Braaten was recently elected as a District Judge and will replace Judge Richard Geiger. Tabor is the Chief Deputy Attorney General, and replaces Rosellen Sand. The Committee works to combat the issue of violence against women and sexual assault.

Heather Lee of Fargo has been appointed as the student representative to the Board of Higher Education. Lee is a student at NDSU, and replaces Jason Bernhardt. The board handles the policy making for all the institutions of the North Dakota University System. The Board also has control and administration of the state colleges and universities.

Shirley Gummer of Mandan has been appointed to the Milk Marketing Board. Gummer, a retired farmer, will serve out the remainder of Phyllis Connolly's term to expire on July 1, 2005. Connolly recently passed away. The Milk Marketing Board's duties are to set the price of milk on the hundred weight from the producers, wholesale price, and the retail price at quarterly minimums.

Dr. Cherian Mathew of Dickinson has been appointed to a four-year term with the Board of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Mathew is in private practice, and replaces Dr. Aaron Olson. The Board of Podiatric Medicine licenses podiatrists in North Dakota and handles disciplinary action.

Dr. Ted Becker of Bismarck, Marlan Helgeson of Grand Forks, and Geraldine Foss of Valley City have been re-appointed to five-year terms on the Board of Optometry. Dr. Becker practices at Family Vision; Helgeson is retired from US West, and Foss is a homemaker. The Board licenses optometrists, and handles consumer complaints and disciplinary actions.

Jim Poolman and Bob Peterson, both of Bismarck, have been appointed to four-year terms on the State Employee Suggestion Incentive Program. Poolman is the State Insurance Commissioner, and replaces State Treasurer Kathi Gilmore; Peterson is the State Auditor, and replaces former Director of Economic Development Kevin Cramer. The Committee awards North Dakota state employees for making suggestions that cut costs of state government.

Joe Ibach of Bismarck has been re-appointed to a five-year term with the Real Estate Appraiser Qualifications and Ethics Board. Ibach is President and owner of Dakota Appraisal and Consulting. The Board licenses and certifies real estate appraisers, sets continuing education requirements, and handles complaints.

Susan Stenehjem-Brown of Fargo, Jean Hodges of Bismarck, and Shelly Klein of Mandan have been appointed to the Board of Addiction Counseling Examiners. Stenehjem-Brown replaces Peg Boren; she is a Licensed Addiction Counselor at First Step Recovery. Hodges is an Addiction Counselor at the Heartview Foundation, and replaces Karin Walton. Klein replaces Joan Allen, and is a Level II Addiction Counselor at the West Central Human Service Center. Additionally, Shirley Celley of Spirit Lake will complete the remainder of Frank Jeanette's term that expires on December 31, 2002. Celley is a Licensed Addiction Counselor with the Spirit Lake Nation Recovery and Wellness Program.

Amy Clark of Bismarck and Kathryn Bichler of Linton have been appointed to three-year terms on the Governor's Committee on Aging. Clark is a homemaker with state and national experience in Aging organizations; she replaces Carole Watrel. Bichler is a homemaker and retired farmer; she replaces Peg Puetz. Additionally, Leland Sabby of Valley City has been appointed to complete the remainder of Jerry Lingen's term. Sabby is a retired schoolteacher and a former state legislator who will serve until July 1, 2003. Margaret Tweeten of Thompson has been re-appointed to the Board. Tweeten is the EFNEP/FNP State Coordinator for the NDSU Extension Service.

Carol Mielke of Bismarck has been appointed to replace Carol Dobitz on the Board of Public Accountancy. Mielke is employed as an Income Tax Analyst with the MDU Resources Group, Inc.; she will serve a five-year term. The Board is responsible for the examination, certification, and licensing of certified public accountants and the licensing of public accountants. The board is also responsible for determining standards of integrity, education, and proficiency within the profession.

Ron Hofstrand of Leeds and Jim Jensen of Minot have been re-appointed to two-year terms on the Agricultural Products Utilization Commission. Hofstrand farms in north central North Dakota and Jensen is a realtor and small business owner. The Commission's duties include administering a cooperative marketing grant program designed to encourage agriculture producers groups to develop innovative marketing strategies. It also directs a farm diversification grant program, which is designed to stimulate and foster diversification and innovation and to encourage value-added processing.

Kathy Keiser of Bismarck has been appointed to chair the Children's Services Coordinating Committee. Keiser is the executive director of the Ronald McDonald House. She will fill the position vacated by former Lt. Governor Rosemarie Myrdahl. The Committee's duties are to plan and coordinate services for children and adolescents who are in need of special services.
